Summer Picnic Spots

7 of the best London picnic spots for kids

We were beginning to think the sun was about as elusive as a Snorlax or Dragonite (if you haven’t discovered Pokémon Go yet, ask the kids!). At last, it seems the Great British Summer has begun. With clear blue skies and temperatures soaring, there’s no better time to round up the kids, pack up some snacks and head out for a picnic. London has some of the best picnic spots in England, offering beautiful landscapes and plenty of space for outdoor games. Whether it’s Frisbee, Rounders or a simple game of Bat & Ball, the kids will be entertained for hours. Just be sure to take plenty of sunscreen, cold refreshments and a sunhat for optimum sun protection. We’ve rounded up a list of our top places to picnic in the capital.

Primrose Hill

If it’s a picturesque picnic spot you’re after, head to Primrose Hill in North London. The top of the hill offers incredible views of the city skyline; you and your kids can have a go at spotting some of London’s landmarks, from the Shard to the BT tower. With lush green grass and open space, this really is a little oasis away from the crowds. It’s also a great spot to refuel and relax after visiting London Zoo, which is located a short walk away.

Victoria Park

Opened in 1845 and spreading across 86.18 hectares, Victoria Park is one of London’s oldest and largest parks. This beautiful park is great for families, with plenty of space to lay to your picnic blanket and set up some outdoor games. One of London’s best kept secrets, Victoria Park is a haven of beautiful trees and flowers with a fully-functioning fountain and a playground for the kids.

St James Park

The most beautiful of the Royal Parks, St James Park is located between Buckingham Palace, Horse Guards Parade and the Mall. While it does attract plenty of tourists, St James has everything you need for a picnic spot and makes a great place to stop off for an al fresco lunch. Kids will love watching the feeding of the Pelicans, which usually takes place between 2.30-3.00pm.

Holland Park

With an ice-cream stand, nearby café, playgrounds and woodland areas, Holland Park is great for exploring and offers an intimate retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city. If your kids are wild about nature, this is the park for you. The nearby Ecology Centre offers a range of environmental themed activities for kids, from nature trails to animal-themed crafts. Formerly a private estate, the manicured lawns of Holland Park are perfect for lazy summer evenings; kids can spot local wildlife, from butterflies to the resident Koi in the Kyoto Japanese Garden.

Hampstead Heath

Another great spot for fantastic views, Hampstead Heath is ideal for chilled out family picnics. Why not make a day of it and take a walk over to Kenwood House; the kids will love clambering through the long grass and hilly mounds. If you’re in need of a cool down, Hampstead’s famous swimming ponds are ideal for a quick dip.

Richmond Park

While Richmond Park is one of the most popular destinations for Londoners on a sunny day, you’re sure to find a secluded spot, as the park spans 2500 acres. This park is great for wildlife spotting; you’re guaranteed to spot a deer or two amongst the oak trees or a rabbit frolicking through the grass. Located just 30 minutes from central London, this park offers a taste of the countryside, with plenty of space for kids to run free and enjoy the fresh air.

Greenwich Park

Last but certainly not least is Greenwich Park, the oldest of London’s parks covering 183 acres. There are plenty of beautiful gardens for kids to explore; head to the Queens Orchard which is abundant with fresh fruit and vegetables or The Rose Park which is in full bloom during July. A visit to the Maritime Museum is highly recommended as a fun and educational day out, as well as the nearby Royal Observatory and Meridian Line. Space mad kids will love learning about the Solar System with a visit to the Planetarium.
